Arriving six years after he made a splash with the film Slam and three years after his debut disc Amethyst Rock Star, the second album from spoken-word standout Saul Williams is a knot of contradictions. It challenges hip-hop orthodoxy through the liberal use of heavy rock samples and beats (see especially "Grippo")--not to mention incendiary cameos from rockers Serj Tankian (System of a Down) and Zack De La Rocha (Rage Aganist the Machine)but it also gets bogged down at times by repetitive riffs ("List of Demands"). At his best, as on the opener "Talk to Strangers," Williams's measured delivery packs an entrancing power. Elsewhere, however, he sounds like he's just reading, not flowing, and his words fall flat. It doesn't help that Williams occasionally lapses into lecture mode, broadly dissing commercial hip-hop in the spoken-word piece "Telegram." He fares far better when he turns his lyrical lasers on legitimate foes, like the oil-thirsty warmongers in "Act III Scene 2." --Anders Smith Lindall Amazon.com

One news blog that I really liked was a USA Today blog that was based around top news stories that could get people caught up on breaking news fast. The blog featured links to pages surrounding all the issues reported in the blog, and there are categories posted underneath the recent posts so one can catch up on world news, economics, obituaries, other popular news sites, as well as related advertisements. A blog like this I would add to my favorites list just because I am always so short on time, it would be convenient for me to read over this blog every day when I had access to the internet and get caught up on major issues in the news that otherwise may have slipped my attention.

Another News blog that I visit on occasion that is really worthwhile is Romenesko's blog on pondering website. This give more of an interactive approach to the news, including stories that are featured in leading news papers and putting them up for commentary online. The blog links directly to major news sites, especially after quotes or after specific references so the readers can see for themselves what the issue is exactly. It creates an eclectic combination of news that otherwise might not be complied so readers don't have to go searching around to find edgy stories that might spark their interest. Stories are drawn from countless news sites to provide a wide range of news stories along with a commentary option.

The third blog that really caught my attention was related to journalism in that it deals with the field of photojournalism. The blogger adds impeccable photos from about and world and coments on them in a journalistic style. The Photographs reflect what is happening in the world telling story by themselves. Photojournalism is very significant and I feel that in the future it will become more prominent as blogs and news sites expend, and journalism mutates into its new online/interactive form.

13 Miners coverage

CBC WORLD NEWS (http://www.cbc.ca/cp/world/060102/w0102128.html)
This site, in covering the minor story was not flashy, did not adversitse a lot and even those advertisemtns were subtle and not distracting. The story was very inpersonal, just the facts, fewer personal quotes. There was definetly the sense of distance in the story, nothing that really reached out to the reader to evoke empathy, just the facts. The lack of advertisments made it eaiser to read and focus as I scrolled down, it almost seemed likea regular word document there was little actual design on the news page.

Herald Tridune (http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/01/03/news/web.0301mine.php)
This site took a more personal approach, including a more extensive list of details, like how resuers worked giving it a different tone that implied it was closer to home. While there were a few ads at the top of the page there was nothing over whelming. The layout was set up in columns to minick the layout of the actual newspaper, while it was breaking news at the time, they get into some details about the personal lives of some of the minors, finding ways we might be able to identify with them with references to retirement and prayers.

CNN (CNN.com)
Of the three this news site was the most colorful, the most personal, and made it seem like this could be happeneing in our own town. The parimiteres of the page however were littered with blinking advertisments in brights reds and yellow, the top of the page reads ing red :"BREAKING NEWS" There are photographs of the famlies that were affected and it drew the reader into the story on a more visual level.
It was sensational then the other two pages and more money based, which became apparent through the advertising.

From behind her thick glossy bangs, Shanna Denha looks up and laughs.
In regards to her future career after graduation she is unsure, but is looking into the world of advertising. "I'd like to do something with an advertsing company." She says.
Dehna is a 26 year old journalism major at Oakland University and when she is not at school or working at Roma Sposa bridal in Birmingham she enjoys reading. "Well I never got the chance to read it in high school." She admits.
"Being 26 in the suburban Detroit area, how different can it be than being 21?" I ask, as the wonders of being 21 have not yet faded from my life as a college student.
"Well I like going out with my friends." Dehna responds, "But i'm so past the whole clubbing scene."
The hot spot for chic women like Dehna in their mid twenties is aparently upscale martini bars in cities such as Birmingham including Blue Martini, the Corner and Forte.
